Snap to Grid

A free spacing game: snap the padding and gaps of five components back to a 4 and 8 px scale before the clock runs out, then see the right steps.

What it does

  • Five components: buttons, a card, a list row, a toast and a form field
  • Three spacings each, drawn as tinted bands you can see and change
  • Tap the step of the scale it was meant to be, or fine-tune with the slider
  • The right steps and the reason behind them after every round

FAQ

What is a spacing scale?

A short list of allowed distances for paddings, gaps and margins, usually built on a 4 px base: 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48. Designers pick from the list instead of typing any number.

Why 4 and 8 px?

Eight divides cleanly, matches common line heights and keeps tap targets in round numbers. Four gives the finer steps inside controls where eight would be too coarse.

What do I do with a value that is off the scale?

Snap it to the nearest step. A value one or two pixels off a step is almost always a drifted copy of it, and adding a new step makes the system noisier.
