Ramp Repair

A free color game: find the one broken shade in a nine-step ramp before your lives run out, and learn what makes a color scale look even.

What it does

  • Nine shades of one color, light to dark, with one of them broken
  • The fault shrinks every level and, from level 4, is about chroma or hue and not only lightness
  • Three lives, 15 seconds a level, or relaxed mode with no clock
  • After each answer, the broken shade next to what it should have been, with its values

FAQ

What is a color ramp?

A row of shades of one color from light to dark, like the 50 to 900 steps of a design system palette. Each step has a job: backgrounds, borders, text, hover states.

How do I make a color ramp that looks even?

Change lightness by the same amount at every step, ideally in a perceptual space such as OKLCH, and let chroma rise and fall smoothly. Equal steps in HSL lightness do not look equal.

Why does one shade in my palette look wrong?

Usually one of three things: its lightness is off the rhythm, its chroma is too high or too low for its neighbors, or its hue has drifted. Compare it with the shades on both sides.
